"Based on the Macmillan Encyclopedia of African-American Culture and History, this edition has been made more accessible for a student audience. Articles have been condensed from the original encyclopedia, material has been updated through summer 2000 when necessary, and new entries have been added that cover several contemporary popular topics and figures that will be of interest to young people. Entries were chosen to reflect the school curriculum, making this an excellent resource for reports as well as for general browsing. ... The format of the encyclopedia includes attractive features, such as a geometric line design at the top of each page, wide margins, generous type size, bold maroon-colored type for the headlines of each article, and maroon-colored type for subtitles within articles. There are guide words at the top of each page for further ease of access. Other features include insets with supplemental material of interest, other sidebar materials in margins (such as chronologies and first facts), captioned photographs and drawings, and cross-references at the end of many of the articles. Volume 4 includes supplemental material, such as detailed chronology of African American histroy from 1444 through 2000, a glossary, a list of suggested resources, and a comprehensive index."
