"According to the preface to Harlem Renaissance, the new series is designed to complement the various parts of Gale's Literary Criticism Series (LCS), providing not only reprinted critical essays (approximately 85 percent of them full text) but also primary documents, photographs, sidebars, and other material not found int the LCS sets. As Gale sees it, Critical Companion titles will serve to expand the collections not only of smaller libraries that do not subscribe to LCS but also of larger libraries: "The overlap between the [Gale Critical Companion Collection] and the LCS titles is 15% or less, ensuringthat LCS subscribers will not duplicate resources in their collections."
