This collection documenting the life and work of one of the twentieth century's most influential diplomats provides a view of pivotal international events that cannot be found anywhere else. John Foster Dulles's contributions as a negotiator, policymaker, and economic adviser are illuminated in this important collection. The Princeton holdings that relate to Dulles's efforts as secretary of state under President Eisenhower shed invaluable light on the official files of the U.S. Department of State.

The countless topics that are freely examined in John Foster Dulles's papers include relations with the Soviet Union; the arms race; and crises in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and East Asia.

The collection is arranged in four series:

• Selected Correspondence and Related Material (reels 1-56), arranged in chronological order. Within each year, the contents are arranged alphabetically by correspondent, geographical area, or subject.
• Diaries and Journals (roll 57), arranged chronologically.
• Articles, Papers, Reports (reels 57-58), arranged chronologically.
• Speeches, Statements, Press Conferences (reels 59-66), arranged chronologically.
• Identifying notes are included, giving such information as a correspondent's name, the year of a document, or a writer's relationship to Dulles. A highly detailed, 1,000-page finding aid has been filmed (roll 67) and is provided in addition to the printed guide.
