For the Soviet Union, the 1920s and 1930s were years of convulsive economic activity. This activity included the implementation of the New Economic Plan (NEP); the revival of the Russian economy during the mid-1920s; the ideological battles associated with the struggle to succeed Lenin; the abandonment of NEP; the process of collectivization; the rise of Gosplan; and the institution of the Five Year Plans.

Charged with producing and expounding the academic justifications for the socialist economy, the Institute of Economics of the Communist Academy ultimately faced the task of imposing the theories of Stalinist economics on Soviet education. Included in this highly significant collection is the documentation of the intellectual debates regarding NEP. and Stalinist economics. By the early 1930s, the institute had become the principal means of transmitting Stalinism to Soviet pedagogy and of monitoring and enforcing its instruction. The collection contains correspondence, records of meetings, academic papers, statistical reports, printed works and a small amount of ephemera.
