Romance was one of the most popular genres of late medieval literature and it circulated widely in early printing. Works included in these fiches are in both verse and prose, in Latin and in a variety of European vernaculars, including French, Italian, German, Spanish and English. Over thirty different sites of printing throughout Europe are represented, including Paris, Poitiers and Troyes in France; Florence, Venice, Naples, Milan and Bologna in Italy; Antwerp, Gouda, Haarlem and Utrecht in the Low Countries; Burgos, Toledo and Seville in Spain; as well as works from Geneva, Bruges and Westminster, among others. Some of the most famous printers of the period are represented including Caxton and Verard.
