Units 46 and 47: German Vernacular Literature

Introduction and selection:
Prof. John L. Flood (Professor of German and Deputy Director, Institute for Germanic Studies, London University)

Covering a wide range of subject matter and literary forms, these units offer a broad survey of what was available to the German reading public in the later 15th century. The material illustrates how, in the broader literary context of the time, original works created in Germany interlink with works translated or (more often) adapted from foreign sources. The books chosen -- many of which feature simple but strikingly effective woodcuts -- span some 40 years, from about 1461 to 1500. They were printed predominantly in the south German printing centers Augsburg, Strasbourg and Basle, but other towns such as Nuremberg, Heidelberg and Ulm are also well represented.
