This collection is divided into five parts, each illuminating different dimensions of the period and reproducing substantial series of key classes from the public records. Part One, taken from PRO classes SP 20, 22, 24 and 28, illustrates the work of parliamentary committees--the most striking innovation in the structure of government introduced by the Long Parliament in the 1640s.

The vast bulk of Exchequer papers at the Public Records Office has often deterred scholars from pursuing an in-depth study of finance during the Civil War. Parts Two to Five of this microfilm edition offer material that makes this important study feasible. How was the Civil War financed? How effective was the Parliamentary regime? What were the implications for the Royalists? How was royal property assessed and disposed? What was done to deal with general social, political and economic dislocations? This collection offers a mass of material with which to answer such questions.
