The British Library's Harleian Collection represents one of the most important of all bodies of manuscripts of 16th- and 17th-century English history.
Robert Harley, Earl of Oxford and Mortimer, was a colorful political figure in 18th-century England. Successively Speaker of the House of Commons and Lord High Treasurer, he was impeached for high treason and sent to the Tower in 1715. An irrepressible collector of books and manuscripts, he owned on his death in 1724 more than 6,000 volumes of manuscripts.
The papers depict the turbulent affairs of the Church from Reformation to Restoration. The archive includes manuscript letters and tracts by Thomas More, Fisher, Gardiner, Cranmer, Pole, Thomas Starkey and documentation of the full social and economic impact of the break with Rome by a 1559 account of the state of Elizabethan revenue.
