From the outset of his reign, King James I (VI of Scotland) tried to ease the troubles between the English and the Danes. The subject matter of these letters to his brother-in-law King Christian IV of Denmark is wide-ranging. The principal concerns are English trading rights in the North Sea and the problems encountered by both mariners and merchants on the Continent. In general, the letters give new insight into the character and preoccupations of the King.

The 139 original Latin letters are reproduced from the collection housed in the Danish National Library in Copenhagen. They appear together with full English translations and have been edited and introduced by Professor Ronald M. Meldrum, Washington State University.
