The British Library has the most remarkable collection of music manuscripts, and its holdings in the period up to the beginning of the late 17th century are of the greatest importance.
The British Library has by far the most extensive collection in the world of autographs by Handel. The major part of the collection came from the Royal Music Library, the material having been presented to George III by J. C. Smith, to whom Handel bequeathed it.
