Scribner Writers Online

  • American Writers Collection

  • Published by Charles Scribner's Sons

This collection includes all volumes in the Scribner American Writers series, including American Writers (the 4-vol. base set and all supplements), American Writers Retrospective, and American Writers Classics. The American Writers Supplements include authors who have never been featured in American Writers, while the retrospective volumes re-examine some of the most important and influential writers in the American canon already covered in American Writers. The classic volumes focus on famous works - many of which are required reading in high schools and colleges. Each classics volume includes 20-25 accessible essays, each on a single work of American literature. Examples include Toni Morrison's Beloved, J.D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye, and Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage. The American Writers Collection also includes Scribner titles that focus on a particular area or genre of American literature, including African American Writers, American Nature Writers, and Modern American Women Writers.

  • African American Writers, 2nd ed., 2-vol. set
  • American Nature Writers, 1st ed., 2-vol. set
  • American Writers, Volumes 1-4, Supplements 1-4 (2-vol. sets), and Supplements 5-19
  • American Writers Retrospective, Supplements 1 & 2 (NEW in Scribner Writers Online)
  • American Writers Classics, Vols. 1 & 2 (NEW in Scribner Writers Online)
  • Modern American Women Writers, 1st ed., 1 vol.

Review:

"A standard reference tool for biocritical information, this gives students a very respectable way to launch a research project...This may also me integrated into Gale's Literature Resource Center as an add-on."
-- School Library Journal (November 2001)
