Although cancer is rare in teens, it remains the leading cause of death by disease among young people between the ages of 10 and 19 in the United States, and during the past 20 years an increase in the incidence of some childhood cancers has been noted. Known cancer risk factors are explained and differentiated from commonly circulated myths and rumors. A section on coping strategies offers suggestions for adolescents undergoing cancer treatment. Those whose lives are touched by cancer in a family member or friend will also find suggestions for handling their feelings and helping others. An end section includes directories that list resources for additional information and support.
