In partnership with the Catholic University of America, thematic volume continues the authoritative scholarship of the acclaimed reference standard New Catholic Encyclopedia (2nd. ed., 15 vols.).
Written from a Catholic perspective, each supplement concentrates on a major theme, with Supplement 2010 having the theme: Modern History and the Church.
This supplement focuses on the Church in Modern History, particularly WWII and after. It includes about 200 entries on the men and women who have been beatified or canonized since 2003 (or in a few cases earlier). Most of the Beatified are new entries -- those not appearing in the 2nd edition, while most of the Saints are revised and updated entries from the 2nd edition. This supplement has more "new" entries than "revised" and "updated" ones.
"New material, especially about the controversial topics of gender and reproduction, has been added. Older articles have been revised, or their bibliographies updated... The scope of this edition is, in fact, impressively broad... Recent news about sexual abuse by members of the clergy is not mentioned, no doubt because of inevitable delays in publishing so large a reference set... Highly recommended."
