Grzimek's Student Animal Life Resource

  • 20-Vol. Set plus Cumulative Index

  • eBook version

  • Published by U·X·L

Following in the footsteps of Gale's acclaimed Grzimek's Animal Life Encyclopedia, 2nd Ed., Grzimek's Student Animal Life Resource offers broad, comprehensive coverage of the animal kingdom, ranging from the simple -- sponges and corals -- to the complex -- mammals. In this 20-volume set, animals are grouped by major classifications: sponges; corals; jellyfishes; segmented worms; crustaceans and mollusks; insects; fishes; amphibians; reptiles birds; and mammals.

In addition, this student edition includes an overview with photos and illustrations, and is present in each volume of the set. The "Words to Know" section gives a pronunciation and definition within the text to scientific or other difficult terms and names. Also included in this version are the Species List by Biome and Species List by Geographic Range.

Review:

"For a quick overview of the world's birds, articles here provide that introduction. Each volume has the same Reader's Guide, a 14-page pronunciation guide for scientific names, a 13-page glossary and a "Getting to Know Birds" section which provides bibliography of books, periodicals and Web sites. Chapters begin with the name of the class, order and number of families. Each entry describes the physical characteristics, geographic range, habitat, diet, behavior and reproduction, relations with people, and conservation status and ends with a brief bibliography of books, periodicals and Web sites. In addition to the text, a map of the world points out the locations of the species. Beautiful color photographs will help students recognize the birds. Insert boxes offer additional information. The back matter of each volume has the species list by biome and geographic range. Highly recommended for middle and high school."
