On July 4, 1967, the Freedom of Information Act was signed into law to assure public access to federal government files. Since this time, the public access effort has been strengthened by both Acts of Congress and Executive orders, resulting in hundreds of thousands of classified United States government documents now available for public view.

After 1974, as thousands of previously classified United States government documents were declassified, the Declassified Documents Reference System was developed to organize the tremendous volume of material and to make it easily accessible to researchers. Declassified Documents Reference System has become a major and highly respected source of information about United States post-World War II domestic policy and international relations. It remains the only compilation of materials that are recorded as they are released by United States government agencies, the National Archives and Presidential Libraries.
