African American Firsts in Science & Technology

  • Published by Gale

In the past, finding information on African Americans in science and technology required gathering numerous sources, many of which were either not comprehensive or outdated. With African American Firsts in Science and Technology, you now have solid information on 1,500 contributions of African Americans throughout the history of the United States in one complete, convenient volume.

Each entry is arranged chronologically, ranges from 50 to 100 words, which includes data associated with the accomplishment, followed by a description of the contribution; a brief biography of the individuals involved; and citations for up to five published sources of additional information. Accompanying the text are black and white portraits of the individuals described in the text or photographs illustrating their accomplishments. Some of the firsts included are:

  • 1876 · Edward Bouchet became the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in the United States
  • 1864 · Rebecca Lee Crumpler became the first African American woman to earn a medical degree in the United States
  • 1915 · Cell biologist Ernest Everett Just became the first recipient of the NAACP Springarn Medal, given for outstanding contribution to the African American community
  • 1969 · Alfred Day Hershey became the first African American to share a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
  • 1995 · Helen Doris Gayle became the first African American woman director of the National Center for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control

Chapters include: Agriculture and Everyday Life, Allied Health, Dentistry and Nursing, Life Sciences, Math and Engineering, Medicine, Physical Sciences, and Transportation. There are about 300 inventors listed in the text.
