This new addition to the Lucent Library of Black History explores the history of African American involvement in sports in the United States from the nineteenth century to the present. Blacks' participation in horse racing, track and field, baseball, basketball, golf, tennis, and boxing are all covered. The title relates the accomplishments of trailblazers as well as the discrimination, insults, and physical violence they endured to open the doors of opportunity for black athletes around the country. The achievements of modern sports stars are also discussed and sidebars feature brief biographies of both pioneers and superstars.
"'Studying this past and understanding how it contributes to present-day dialogues about race and history in America is a critical component of contemporary education,' states the forward of the Lucent Library of Black History. Each volume focuses on one aspect of African American experience and history that has helped shape American society and inform its citizens' attitudes and beliefs about African Americans. Each volume includes black and white illustrations and photos, a relevant chronology, and an index."
