Young Heroes

  • Jyotirmayee Mohapatra: Advocate for India's Young Women

  • Author Adam Woog
  • Published by KidHaven Press

Growing up in her village in India, Jyotirmayee Mohapatra witnessed the serious problems that children, especially girls, face there. As a teen, she organized the Meena Club to draw attention to and attack these problems. India now boasts over 300 Meena Clubs, and in 2004 Jyoti received the prestigious Youth Action Network award.

Review:

"This tribute to a young activist from rural India, known as Jyoti, will leave readers impressed by her work establishing girls' support groups, and open their eyes to the difficult issues facing many young Indians...this entry in the Young Heroes series provides an introduction to the activist for younger or less-able readers."
