As America moves forward in the twenty-first century, many forces are changing its society. The authors of this anthology examine the causes and effects of some of these forces, including the impact of the American lifestyle, the role of technology and foreign policy, and domestic issues such as education, social security, and immigration policy.
"In this catchall collection, the topics debated range from oil reserves to genetically engineered foods, socialized medicine, and recent U.S. foreign-policy decisions. Although most of the selections are from journals or newspapers, two of President George W. Bush's speeches are included. The book follows the series format, alternating pro and con arguments on each subject. The entries are preceded by a short introduction and questions to consider while reading the material. Lists of discussion questions and related organizations are appended. A nice touch is the periodical bibliography inserted after each chapter, tailored to the overarching subject of the entries. Although this book is useful for research, a few of the pieces, especially about fuel alternatives and hybrid cars, may appeal to the curious as well."
