From the Collections of the Amistad Research Center

This collection is the complete archive of the Louisiana National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Field Director's files. While there were two field directors during the period this collection spans--Mary Jamison (1966- 1967) and Harvey Ronald H. Britton (1967-1976)--most records contained here are under Britton's tenure.

The collection consists of reports, press releases, minutes, newsletters, complaints, newspaper clippings, and photographs. It is divided into two parts:

1. Correspondence is arranged chronologically and includes letters to or from the field director. Correspondents include political figures, law enforcement officials and lawyers, NAACP officials at both the local and national levels, and local civil rights leaders.

Among the many prominent correspondents are Roy Wilkins, Emmitt Douglas, Victor Bussie, Gerald J. Gallinghouse, and Bella Abzug. Topics in these letters deal with organizational issues of the NAACP, civil rights complaints, and related issues.

2. Non-correspondence is arranged according to origin of the document, beginning with the Louisiana Field Director's Office, and followed by Louisiana NAACP Branches, Louisiana State Office, etc.

Documents include monthly reports of the field director, press releases, newsletters, letters to the Louisiana office regarding civil rights complaints, board minutes, and documents from other organizations, such as the American Jewish Committee and Urban League.
