The Joseph Buell Papers is comprised of correspondence and legal papers relating to Aaron Burr and Harman Blennerhassett's 1806 conspiracy to seize territory in Mexico. Buell was commander of the Ohio Militia who was ordered to seize Burr's supplies.
Joseph and Timothy Buell were early settlers and prominent citizens of Marietta, Ohio. The Joseph Buell Family Papers contain valuable material on the frontier and settlement experiences in the Northwest Territory. Included here are correspondence, genealogical material, transcripts of journals, and family recollections of the settlement of the Ohio frontier.
The transcript of the journal of Sergeant Joseph Buell, kept from September 1785 through June 1789, gives a vivid account of a march with his men into the western country. His reports of the physical hardships they suffered, the rough customs, frequent desertions and rebelliousness of the men, and the harsh discipline portray the tremendous difficulty of establishing and maintaining a military post on the frontier while facing opposition from the Shawnee inhabitants of the region.
