George Gordon Meade was the Union commanding general at Gettysburg during what is considered the Civil War's decisive battle from July 1-3, 1863. A West Point graduate, he fought in the Mexican War and served as a major general and commander of the Army of the Potomac in the Civil War. He also served during Reconstruction as commander of the 3rd Military District in the South.
