Fin-de-Siecle Symbolist and Avant-Garde Periodicals

Works by major and minor contributors to avant-garde French and Belgian belles-lettres are presented in this collection. Selected by Kenneth Cornell in his book The Symbolist Movement, this collection makes it possible to gain an appreciation of the total context in which symbolism and other literary currents of the times emerged.
This collection encompasses the dozens of small symbolist and avant-garde periodicals that were founded in late 19th-century France by writers of these movements in an effort to find an audience for their work. Significant for their political, sociological and philosophical articles, as well as for their poetry, essays, literary criticism and theater, art and music reviews, these publications included the influential Mercure de France, which became a major fixture in French intellectual and literary journalism for the next 75 years, along with such notable journals as:
