The Changing Men Collections: A Chronicle of the Modern Men's Movement

  • Published by Primary Source Microfilm

Filmed from the Holdings of The Changing Men Collections, Special Collections, Michigan State University Libraries

A Chronicle of the Modern Men's Movement comprises the largest research collection of archival materials about the modern men's movement.

The wide-ranging collection features manuscript materials, research materials, ephemera, organizational files, conferences and events; a large collection of nearly 350 periodicals and newsletters devoted to the men's movement, many of which are quite rare; and the archives of leading members of the various branches of the men's movement who have donated their materials.

The Changing Men Collections is organized into three parts: vertical files, periodicals and newsletters, and archives. The vertical files document the development of the men's movement during the last 25 years. Consisting of research materials on key issues and topics in the men's movement, files cover African-American men, battered men, circumcision, ecomasculinity, men's health, men's movement and religion, teen fathers, shadow work, men's support networks, the ManKind Project, anger management, and relationships.

The periodical and newsletter collection features nearly 350 titles dating from the mid-1970s to early 2003. Many of these titles were of short duration and not widely distributed. Today most are held only by The Changing Men Collections at Michigan State University. A majority of the runs are complete.

The archives consist of files of extensive materials on the work of leading figures in various aspects of the men's movement, donated by the researchers themselves, such as Bruce Curtis, Peter Cyr, Jeff Beane, Joseph Pleck, Edward Honnold and Francis Baumli.
