This unique collection contains the letters, speeches, articles and draft manuscript works of:

• John Stuart Mill (1806-1873), political economist, philosopher and radical
• Harriet Taylor (1807-1858), feminist, socialist and Mill's constant companion and collaborator
• Helen Taylor (1831-1907), daughter of Harriet Taylor and Mill's devoted assistant from 1858

The papers form a central source for the study of economics, political theory, philosophy, socialism and minority rights, feminism and women's rights and 19th-century politics and reform.

The collection includes:

• Correspondence of J.S. Mill, Harriet Taylor and Helen Taylor on a variety of subjects

• Helen Taylor's diaries, 1842-1847, and letters on the Moral Reform Union, women's suffrage, the social position and education of women, the London School Board, charities and political questions

• The full original manuscript draft of John Stuart Mill's Autobiography, from the collection of the John Rylands University Library, Manchester. In addition to reflection on his life and thought, this iconoclastic work is an assault on the class system and an argument for the rights of women.

The interdisciplinary opportunities offered by the collection appeal to a broad range of scholars. Historians are intrigued by Mill's involvement in radical politics and socialism -- especially following the 1848 revolution in Europe.

Students of the early women's movement will take interest in Mill as the author of The Subjection of Women, a co-production with Harriet Taylor, and other works on the subject of women's rights. Economists and political theorists will also find much in this collection to stimulate a detailed reassessment of one of 19th-century Europe's most important thinkers.
