Anti-Socialist Organizations in Britain

  • Anti-Socialist Journals, 1874-1914

  • Published by Primary Source Microfilm

This collection offers the principal anti-socialist, individualist and free-labor journals for the period 1874 to 1914.

Key groups covered include: the Vigilance Association for the Defence of Personal Rights, later the Personal Rights Association (1871-continuing); the Liberty and Property Defence League (1822-1933) -- founded by Lord Echo (later Lord Wemyss), Herbert Spencer and others directly opposed to state intervention; the National Federation of Associated Employers of Labour (1874-1882); the Anti-Socialist Union (1908-1914) defending the constitution, the monarchy, the rights and liberties of the individual, the right of private property and the sanctity of home and family life; and the Middle Class Defence League (1906-1914).

Journals were a major propaganda and information tool in these groups' implacable opposition to socialism. These provide a wealth of material on trade unionism, current affairs, trade and industry, personal rights and numerous other subjects.

Review:

"These journals will prove invaluable to the political and welfare historian and a vade mecum for all researchers into the social politics of late Victorian and Edwardian Britain." -- Dr. Roger Davidson, University of Edinburgh
