The first dean and second president of Bryn Mawr College, M. Carey Thomas remains an outstanding figure in the history of women's education. Incorporating Thomas's personal papers and her college records, The Papers of M. Carey Thomas present the archival holdings of Bryn Mawr College for scholarly research of the history of American higher education and the women's movement.

Thomas's speeches, memoranda, reports and other records are included. These records reflect Thomas's standards for academic excellence-- her role as a spokeswoman for women's education; her relations with the Board of Trustees, the faculty and the student body; and the daily administration of the college.

Thomas's personal papers document her education in European travels, her Quaker family life and her family's involvement in civic, church and educational activities in Philadelphia and Baltimore.

Among the personal material contained in the collection are:

  • Scrapbooks The collection also includes letters to and from Mary E. Garret, heiress to the B & O Railroad fortune, who was instrumental with Thomas in founding the Bryn Mawr School, a girls' preparatory school in Baltimore.

    Also included are the Bryn Mawr School Papers, with correspondence and miscellaneous material such as:

    • Class schedules
    • Library accession records
    • Inventories of art reproductions
    The Papers of M. Carey Thomas incorporates the Carrie C. Catt Photograph Albums from the M. Carey Thomas Collection at Bryn Mawr College, consisting of photographs collected and organized by Carrie Chapman Catt to create a pictorial history of the women's suffrage movement. The Papers of M. Carey Thomas chronicles the activities and philosophies of this influential woman who set standards that dramatically changed higher education for women.
