Gale Digital Archives

  • British Literary Manuscripts Online, Medieval and Renaissance

  • Published by Gale

British Literary Manuscripts Online, Medieval and Renaissance presents digital images of more than 380,000 pages of manuscripts dating roughly from 1150 to 1660, including poems, romances, tales, chronicles, sermons, and correspondence as well as theological and historical sources. The images are linked to searchable metadata that has been derived from catalog records of the various library collections from which the materials have been filmed. The online resource is being created by digitizing the images and related finding aids from six microfilm collections originally published by Primary Source Microfilm:

  • Medieval Literary and Historical Manuscripts in the Cotton Collection, from the British Library, London
  • British Literary Manuscripts from the British Library, London: Series Three: The Medieval Age, c.1150-c.1500
  • British Literary Manuscripts from the British Library, London: Series One: The English Renaissance, c.1500-1700
  • British Literary Manuscripts from the Folger Shakespeare Library Washington D.C.: The English Renaissance: Literature from the Tudor Period to the Restoration c.1500-c.1700
  • The Forster and Dyce Collections: From the National Art Library at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London: Part One: 16th & 17th Century Manuscripts
  • British Literary Manuscripts from the National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh: Part One: Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts c.1300-c.1700

Review:

"...the availablity of these otherwise rare materials is a real boon for scholars. Although the earliest medieval sources will appeal mainly to specialists, the Renaissance material is accessible to any passionate student. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty/researchers."
