The availability of MARC records for ongoing and in-depth
microform collections enhances libraries' bibliographic control
over their holdings, not only for basic inventory and collection
development but also for reader services and other functions. MARC
records in the online and Web-based catalog environment amplify
access to the library's holdings by allowing simultaneous,
multi-user search strategies, including authors, titles and
subject headings.
Many Primary Source Microfilm (PSM) collections have online MARC
coverage at the collection-title level. By this is meant that the
individual items or titles contained in the collection do not have
separate online records but rather that one single record describes
the collection as a whole under its established/published name.
There may be added descriptive fields in the collection-title record
for distinct parts or series of the collection, and there may be
added entries or tracings for distinctive persons or corporate bodies
mentioned in the collection. This will depend upon the descriptive
approach of the library or libraries that created these records
in OCLC and/or RLIN.
In the absence of more detailed online bibliographical description,
a collection-title record at least provides end-user access to the
collection at that level and allows libraries to "hang their
hats," so to speak, on the record's holding screen.
