World hunger is an elusive problem to solve because so many things contribute to it including political corruption, war, natural disasters, famine, disease and lack of education. The preface states, "Chronic hunger afflicts approximately 820 million people worldwide, killing 25,000 people every day, one child very eight seconds." While most of these are in Asia and Africa, we have undernourished people living in the U.S. These reprinted articles are organized under six headings: "The Slow and Silent Killer: What Causes Famine?", "Famines in the World Today," "Relief Efforts: Aid Versus Development," "Women and Children: Greatest Victims, Greatest Hope," "Promising Solution or Risky Experiment? The Biotechnology Debate" and "Food Stamps and Farm Subsidies: Hunger in America." Each section has the editor's introduction to the topic and inset boxes have brief statements. The appendix provides a copy of the "United Nations Millennium Declaration" of September 18, 2000, a 2-page book bibliography, 2 pages of Web sites and an 8-page annotated periodical bibliography.
