Reference for Students

Depression. By Emma Carlson Berne. Detroit, Mich.: Greenhaven Press Thomson Gale, 2007. 1 vol. 184 p. $36.20. ISBN 10: 0-7377-3645-3; 13: 978-0-7377-3645-8.

DepressionBecause so much has been written about depression, this synthesis will be helpful for students to use before they expand their research. Chapter titles include "What Is Depression," "Personal Perspectives on Depression," "Treatments for Depression" and "The Debate over Antidepressants." A librarian might want to share this title with a student who has expressed some anxiety about depression. Young people today seem to be faced with events which bring about depression. Trying to understand and confront the issue is essential, and the discussion of treatments may wipe away a reluctance to confess to being depressed because the student fears the possible treatment. Health classes also should be aware of this book.
