At great expense, a 700-mile fence, supposed to stop the flow of illegal immigrants to the U.S., is being built between the border with Mexico and the United States. Controversy over the Immigration Reform Bill passed in December 2005 has brought marchers to protests on both sides of this issue. Chapter 1 asks, "Is Illegal Immigration a Serious Problem for the United States?" and poses the issue of visa overstayers as a part of the problem. One author even suggests that Mexican radicals want to retake the Southwest. "Does Illegal Immigration Harm the United States?" has the general debate with one article about Mexican immigrants not being terrorists. "Does the United States Treat Illegal Immigrants Fairly?" and "How Should the Government Respond to Illegal Immigration?" generate a wide range of issues for students to read and then do further research. These issues will not go away in the immediate future. What can be done to solve the problem needs to be discussed by students in school today.
