North and South Korea. Edited by Louise I. Gerdes. Detroit, Mich.: Greenhaven Press Thomson Gale, 2007. 1 vol. 202 p. $36.20. ISBN 10: 0-7377-3765-3; 13: 978-0-7377-3765-3.

North and South KoreaAt the end of World War II and Korea's liberation from Japan, Russia occupied North Korea and the U.S. occupied South Korea. When the U.N. passed a resolution for a united Korean government, the Cold War was on and Russia refused establishing a Communist nation while elections were held in South Korea. North Korea then invaded South Korea. At the end of the Korean War, the division that remains today was re-established. Chapters here ask, "Does North Korea Pose a Serious Threat?", "What Policies Toward North Korea Are Best?", "What Policies Best Serve South Korea?", while the final chapter reports on the status of "Democracy and Human Rights in North and South Korea." Students will need to be encouraged to study this war with one raging in their own lives in Iraq.
