Energy Alternatives. By Karen D. Povey. Detroit, Mich.: Lucent Books Gale 2007. 1 vol. $32.45. 112 p. $32.45. ISBN 10: 1-59018-980-1; 13: 978-1-59018-980-9

Energy AlternativesThe announcement of Al Gore’s winning the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts on saving the environment by acknowledging and fighting global warming coupled with his winning an Academy Award for his film on that subject has moved this topic even more into the limelight. Chapter titles here include "Addicted to Oil," "In Pursuit of Energy Alternatives," "Developing Alternative Vehicle Fuels," "What Is the Potential of Solar Power," "Harnessing Energy from the Earth," "The Nuclear Option," and "The Future of Energy." Inset boxes offer additional information and quotations. The foreword to this series attributes a quote to someone who has not worked at the designated place of employment for more than ten years; however, the text is very current and the color photographs and charts make it very appealing to readers. While the thin format of the book will make it attractive to the slower reader, the text itself is not all that easy to read. Appendixes include chapter notes, discussion questions, organizations to contact and a two-page bibliography of additional resources.
