Hate Crimes. By Michael V. Uschan. Detroit, Mich.: Lucent Books Thomson Gale, 2007. 1 vol. 112 p. $32.45. ISBN 978-1-56006-661-3.

Hate Crimes Using the FBI definition of hate crimes as "criminal offenses that are motivated in whole or in part, by the offender’s bias against [the victim]," the authors cover "How People Learn to Hate," "Hate Crimes Based on Race," "Hate Crimes Based on Religion," "Hate Crimes Based on Sexual Orientation," "Hating Immigrants, the Disabled, and the Homeless," "The Perpetrators of Hate Crimes," and "Fighting Hate Crimes." Because most students are taught to hate in their homes, asking students to read about the various victims of hate crimes may help them recognize and address their own biases. This process must start somewhere.
