The excerpts from holy books bring together writings, speeches and sacred texts from across the religious spectrum. They are grouped into chapters with three themes, "Creation Stories and Foundation Myths," "Characteristics of the Divine" and "Religion as a Guide to Living." One creation story is from the lore of the U.S. Native American. The introduction to each document places it in its historical context. Background information is given in "Things to Remember while Reading." Students learn later historical events in "What Happened Next" and significant and interesting facts about the author, the document or the events are found in "Did You Know…" "Consider the Following" provides questions for critical thinking.
