Multiculturalism in the United States, A Comparative Guide to Acculturation and Ethnicity, Revised and Expanded Edition. By John D. Buenker and Lorman A. Ratner. Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, 2005. 1 vol. 456 p. $75. ISBN 0-313-32404-2.

This is a good guide for helping students understand cultures.

Helping students understand the similarities and differences between ethnic groups, and between earlier arrivals and those who are more recent immigrants to this country means changes in their perspectives. This book, a new edition of one published 12 years ago, has added to those from Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East and Africa. One finds Americans: Arab, Asian Indian, Dominican, Filipino, Haitian, Korean and Vietnamese. It offers the contributions of these people to the culture they found and describes the impact on their cultures. Each essay has notes and a bibliographical essay. This volume ends with a lengthy bibliographical essay covering the entire text. This will not be an easy reference to read, but should be very helpful for teachers and AP classes in social studies.
