Reference for Students

Magill's Choice: American Indian Biographies, Revised Edition. Ed. by Carole A. Barrett and Harvey Markowitz. Pasadena, CA: Salem Press, 2005. 1 vol. 540 p. $62. ISBN 1-58765-233-1.

This is a very good reference on Native American contributions to history.

To fill the gap for students looking for biographical information about Native Americans, this book has 391 essays. It reflects the 1999 edition to which 60 new essays have been added and some entries lengthened. Presenting profiles of religious, social and political leaders, warriors and reformers from the past, they also include modern activists, writers, artists, entertainers, scientists and athletes. Articles range in length from 200 to 3,000 words. This is an affordable and authoritative resource. The chronological coverage is mid-16th century until today, with 310 born before the 20 th century and 110 before the 19 th century. The signed articles include the birth and death dates (if appropriate), other names, tribal affiliation and the person's significance. Articles end with further reading suggestions. A few black-and-white photographs are found through the text. This will be helpful in the study of the Native American contributions to U.S. History. Recommended.
