Junior Worldmark Encyclopedia of the States, 4th Ed. Detroit: UXL, 2004. 4 vols. 1,192 p. ISBN 0-7876-9197-6.
For those fifth or sixth grade students who study the United States, this is another basic resource. Based on the 6th edition of Worldmark Encyclopedia of the States, each state report follows a common pattern by presenting the state seal, flag, a map and a population profile. Preliminary information given includes origin of the state's name and nickname; the capital; the date it entered the union; the official song, motto, coat of arms, text description of the flag and official seal (since they are not in color), bird, fish, flower, tree, stone and mineral; and time zone. Additional information includes population by race, presidential vote by political parties and a list of governors. Articles include 40 numbered headings, including location and size, topography, climate, ethnic groups, languages, religions, transportation, history, judicial system, migration, economy, industry and labor, agriculture, fishing, forestry, mining, energy, taxation, health, housing, education, arts, libraries and museums, communications, recreation and famous people. This set will introduce students to the parent volume they will use in high school and college. As it ages, students will need to check information in more up-to-date resources, a good learning experience in itself. Recommended from elementary to high school for those older students who have reading problems.
