This is a useful reference for upper elementary social studies classes. An eight-page listing of "Words to Know" introduces the book and it ends with a keyword index. For each entry, the name of the state is provided with a pronunciation guide, the origin of the state name, the capital and when it entered the country. The coat of arms, shown at the top of the page, is described, holidays are listed, and the time zone given. Numbered sections include location and size, climate, plants and animals, environmental protection, population groups and languages, religions, transportation, history, government and political parties, judicial system, economy, agriculture, natural resources, energy and power, health, housing, education, arts, libraries and museums, media, tourism/travel and recreation, sports, famous people, and a bibliography. Recommended.
