How It's Done
Relevancy results are difficult to attain when searching across disparate sources as each data source uses its own algorithms. As a result, the relevancy of the returned results often don’t relate to the search term input by the user. By employing clustering methodology, Gale PowerSearchPlus allows users to quickly understand the context and true meaning of each cluster as well as the contextual value of the documents contained within. By employing a variety of techniques to address the challenge of effectively displaying results from searches of multiple, dissimilar sources, PowerSearch Plus:
- Identifies common topics among results from all sources
- Analyzes data to produce sensible and intuitive labels and then allocates results among the labeled clusters
- Analyzes the full body of results before creating cluster labels
- Cluster labels that reflect both proximity to search terms plus common terms extracted from the meta data — snippets are analyzed in some data sources, abstracts in others, subject headings in others, and so on
- Reanalyzes cluster labels and each retrieved piece of content is assigned to one or more clusters according to predefined thresholds that determine how many documents are placed in any cluster, as well as how many clusters any document is assigned to
