The Times Digital Archive Sample Searches

The Times Digital Archive is the complete digital edition of The Times (London) from 1785 to 1985 that allows keyword searching and hit-term highlighting to retrieve full facsimile images of either a specific article or a complete page. The entire newspaper is captured, with all articles, advertisements and illustrations/photos divided into categories to facilitate searching.

Search 1:

How can one find an article(s) in The Times Digital Archive on the SALT treaty and Leonid Brezhnev?

Solution:

1. Opened The Times Digital Archive and went to the "Keyword search" page.
2. Entered "Brezhnev and SALT" in the entry box and selected "in entire article content".
3. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved more than 260 articles.

Search 2:

How can one find any mention of Mao and his "Great Leap Forward" program in The Times Digital Archive?

Solution:

1. Opened The Times Digital Archive and went to the "Keyword search" page.
2. Entered "Mao and Great Leap Forward" in the entry box and selected "in entire article content".
3. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved more than 100 articles.

Search 3:

A customer using The Times Digital Archive wanted to find some editorial and news articles on the Berlin Airlift of 1948-49.

Solution:

1. Opened The Times Digital Archive and went to the "Keyword search" page.
2. Entered "Berlin Airlift" in the entry box.
3. Searched for words "in title, citation, abstract".
4. Limited by date after 1 January 1948.
5. Limited by section by checking the "Editorial and Commentary" and "News" boxes.
6. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved 11 articles.

Search 4:

A customer using The Times Digital Archive wanted to find any articles that mentioned Operation Sea Lion, Hitler's plan to invade England during World War II.

Solution:

1. Opened The Times Digital Archive and went to the "Keyword search" page.
2. Entered "Operation Sea Lion" in the entry box.
3. Searched for words "in entire content".
4. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved 12 articles.

Search 5:

A user of The Times Digital Archive wanted to find out the effects of the Civil War on the Nevada Territory from articles written during the war period.

Solution:

1. Opened The Times Digital Archive and went to the "Advanced search" page.
2. Selected "Key Word (kw)" and entered "Civil w1 War" in the first entry box.
3. Selected "Text (tx)" and entered "Nevada" in the second entry box.
4. Limited by date "between" 1861 and 1865.
5. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved four articles.
