PROMT® Sample Searches

PROMT® (Predicast Overview of Markets and Technology) features abstracts and full text from international trade and business journals, industry newsletters, and newspapers, plus summaries from Investext® investment and brokerage firm reports.

Search 1:

An e-mail requestor using PROMT® wanted to find full-text articles about the nanotechnology industry in Canada published in 2004.

Solution:

  1. Opened PROMT® and went to the "Advanced search" page.
  2. Selected "Key Word (ke)" and entered "nanotechnology" in the first entry box.
  3. Selected "Region (rg)" and entered "Canada" in the second entry box.
  4. Checked the "to articles with text" box.
  5. Limited by date "on" 2004.
  6. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved seven articles.

Search 2:

A customer using PROMT® called seeking help in formulating a search strategy to retrieve articles from 2003 to the present about Warren Buffett and his investment activities and comments.

Solution:

  1. Opened PROMT® and went to the "Keyword search" page.
  2. Entered "Warren Buffett and investment*" in the entry box.
  3. Selected "Key Word (ke)" and entered "Warren Buffett" in the second entry box.
  4. Searched for words "in title, citation, abstract".
  5. Limited "to articles with text".
  6. Limited by date "after" 2002.
  7. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved 20 articles that fulfilled the user's request.

Search 3:

A PROMT® user wanted to find articles on food processing and sanitary conditions.

Solution:

  1. Opened PROMT® and went to the "Keyword search" page.
  2. Entered "food processing and sanit* condition*" in the entry box.
  3. Searched for words "in entire article content".
  4. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved more than 20 articles that fulfilled the user's request.

Search 4:

The editor of the Merck company intranet Web site wanted to create a link to PROMT® that would retrieve 2004 news about the company.

Solution:

  1. Opened PROMT® went to the "Advanced search" page.
  2. Selected "Company (co)" and entered "Merck" in the first entry box.
  3. Limited "to articles with text".
  4. Limited by date "on" 2004.
  5. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved more than 150 articles.
  6. Because the InfoMark feature is available in PROMT®, all the Web site editor needed to do was highlight the URL in the browser address box, copy it and place it wherever desired (i.e. as a link on a Web page, as a favorite in the Internet Explorer browser, or as a bookmark in the Netscape browser).

Search 5:

How can one find full-text articles about the management style used at Ben and Jerry's Homemade Inc.?

Solution:

  1. Open PROMT® and go to the "Subject guide search" page.
  2. Enter "Ben and Jerry's Homemade Inc." in the box.
  3. Limit "to articles with text".
  4. Click on the "Search" button, then the "See" button to view the 28 topical subdivisions.
  5. Retrieved under the "Management Procedures" subdivision heading are more than 50 articles divided by categories like "management dynamics" and "personnel administration".
