National Newspaper Index provides quick access to the indexing of America's top five newspapers in one seamless search: The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post.

Search 1:

A user of National Newspaper Index wanted to find article citations dealing with the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal.

Solution:

  1. Opened National Newspaper Index and went to the "Subject guide search" page.
  2. Entered "Abu Ghraib" in the entry box and clicked on the "Search" button.
  3. Retrieved was the subject heading "Abu Ghraib Prison" and the "View" button underneath it was clicked to get more than 20 article citations.

Search 2:

How can citations to articles/comments about neo-conservatism be found in the New York Times?

Solution:

  1. Open National Newspaper Index and go to the "Keyword search" page.
  2. Enter "neo-conservatism or neoconservatism" in the search box.
  3. Click on the "Browse" button to limit search to "New York Times".
  4. Click on the "Search" button to retrieve six citations.

Search 3:

A National Newspaper Index user wanted to find article citations to articles discussion the technology company Applied Digital Solutions and its product "Verichip".

Solution:

  1. Opened National Newspaper Index and went to the "Advanced search" page.
  2. Selected "Subject (su)" and entered "Applied Digital Solutions".
  3. Selected "Key Word (ke)" and entered "chip or verichip" in the second entry box.
  4. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved five relevant article citations.

Search 4:

A researcher investigating news stories about Osama Bin Laden viodetapes wanted to find relavant news article citations in National Newspaper Index.

Solution:

  1. Opened National Newspaper Index and went to the "Keyword search" page.
  2. Entered "(Usama or Osama) and (Bin Laden) and (video* or tape*)" in the entry box.
  3. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved more than 160 article citations.

Search 5:

A professor at the University of Michigan using National Newspaper Index wanted to find article citations dealing with the issue of workplace privacy.

Solution:

  1. Opened National Newspaper Index and went to the "Relevance search" page.
  2. Entered "workplace privacy" in the entry box.
  3. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved more than 20 relevant article citations.
