Eighteenth Century Collections Online can be used to access the digital images of every page of approximately 150,000 books published during the 18th Century. With full-text searching of about 33 million pages, the database allows researchers new methods of access to critical information in the fields of history, literature, religion, law, fine arts, science and more.

Search 1:

Are there any autobiographical works of Benjamin Franklin in Eighteenth Century Collections Online? If so, how can they be retrieved?

Solution:

  1. Open Eighteenth Century Collections Online, enter "Benjamin Franklin" in the entry box and select "Author" from the dropdown list.
  2. Select "Literature and Languarge" in the "Subject Area:" box.
  3. Click the "Search" button and seven records are retrieved.
  4. Three of the seven records retrieved matched the search request.

Search 2:

How can one retrieve writings in English (with illustrations) that discuss the French Revolution and were published between 1796 and 1799 (inclusively)?

Solution:

  1. Open Eighteenth Century Collections Online and go to the "Advanced Search" page
  2. Enter "French Revolution" in "Keyword" in the first the entry box.
  3. Limited "Year(s) of Publication:" to "1796-1799" and checked the "Include documents with no known publication date." box.
  4. Limited "by Subject Area:" to "History and Geography".
  5. Limited "by Language:" to "English".
  6. Limited "to Illustrated Works Containing:" "Illustration".
  7. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved more than 20 records.

Search 3:

A user of Eighteenth Century Collections Online wanted to know how to get a list of all publications in the database by George Washington.

Solution:

  1. Opened Eighteenth Century Collections Online and clicked on the "Browse Authors" button.
  2. Entered "Washington, George" in the "Find author:", clicked on the "Go" button and the "Washington, George" link appeared.
  3. Clicked on the "Washington, George" link and retrieved 30 publications.

Search 4:

How can one retrieve a list of books about the American Revolution?

Solution:

  1. Open Eighteenth Century Collections Online enter "American Revolution" in the "Basic Search" entry box, making sure "Keyword" is selected in "Search type".
  2. Limit "by Subject Area:" to "History and Geography".
  3. Click the "Search" button to retrieve a list of more than 15 books.

Search 5:

How can one find out if there are any works about Napoleon in Eighteenth Century Collections Online?

Solution:

  1. Open Eighteenth Century Collections Online and enter "Napoleon" in the "Basic Search" entry box.
  2. Select "Keyword" for "Search type:".
  3. Click on the "Search" button to retrieve two literary works:
