Canadian Periodical Index Quarterly (CPI.Q) provides access to articles from a comprehensive list of Canadian and international journals, magazines, selected sections of the Globe and Mail, Canadian biographies and other reference content from Gale™, all with a Canadian focus.

Search 1:

An employee working for the Globe and Mail in Toronto wanted to know how to search for articles in Canadian Periodical Index Quarterly (CPI.Q) for the earliest article on SARS in the Globe and Mail.

Solution:

  1. Opened Canadian Periodical Index Quarterly (CPI.Q) and went into the "Subject guide search" page.
  2. Used the "Browse" button to select "Globe & Mail (Toronto, Canada)".
  3. Entered "SARS" in the entry box and found that "Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome" was the preferred term used.
  4. Returned to the "Subject guide search" page and entered "Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome" in the entry box.
  5. Clicked on the "Search" button and more than 300 articles matching the above criteria were retrieved.
  6. Clicked the "View" button, then the arrow icon with the vertical line and scrolled down to the bottom of the page to find that the earliest article on SARS in the Globe and Mail occurred in the March 24, 2003 issue. The article title was "Two new SARS cases reported", by Lisa Priest.

Search 2:

A customer using Canadian Periodical Index Quarterly (CPI.Q) wanted to know more about the troubled Canadian beef industry. She was looking for full-text articles published in 2003.

Solution:

  1. Entered Canadian Periodical Index Quarterly (CPI.Q) and went to the "Advanced search" page.
  2. Selected "Subject (su)" and entered "Canada" in the first entry box.
  3. Selected "Subject (su)" and entered "beef industry" in the second entry box.
  4. Checked the "to articles with text" box and limited by date "after" 2002.
  5. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved more than 15 articles that fulfilled her request.

Search 3:

A reference librarian from the University of Toronto wanted to know how to create a link from Canadian Periodical Index Quarterly (CPI.Q) so that the latest full-text issues of the "Globe & Mail", January 1, 2004 to the present, would appear without having to do the search each time.

Solution:

  3. Entered the "Globe & Mail" in the "to the following journal(s)" entry box.
  4. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved all full-text articles from the "Globe & Mail (Toronto, Canada)" from January 1, 2004 to the present.
  5. Because the InfoMark feature is available in Canadian Periodical Index Quarterly (CPI.Q), all the librarian needed to do was highlight the URL in the browser address box,

Search 4:

A Canadian political historian wanted to find a way to retrieve full-text articles in Canadian Periodical Index Quarterly (CPI.Q) from 1993 to the present on the political activities of Bloc Quebecois, a prominent political party in Quebec.

Solution:

  1. Opened Canadian Periodical Index Quarterly (CPI.Q) and went to the "Advanced search" page.
  2. Selected "Subject (su)" and entered "Bloc Quebecois" in the first entry box.
  3. Checked the "to articles with text" box and limited date to "after" 1992.
  4. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved more than 100 articles matching the requested criteria.

Search 5:

A user of Canadian Periodical Index Quarterly (CPI.Q) wanted to find an article listing the cabinet ministers working under the new Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin.

Solution:

  3. Checked the "to articles with text" box and limited by date after 1 November 2003.
  4. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved the subject heading "Cabinet Officials".
  5. Clicked on the "View" button under "Cabinet Officials" to retrieve more than 20 articles.
  6. The 16th article retrieved provided the requested list of cabinet ministers:
WHO'S WHO. (National News)(MARTIN'S NEW CABINET)(Brief Article).
