Corbis Images for Education provides access to more than 400,000 historical, fine art, nature and science images that can be used in learning-related applications such as class projects and assignments, presentations, lesson plans, Web coursework, classroom materials, research projects and much more.

Search 1:

A librarian from the University of North Texas using Corbis Images for Education wanted to know how to retrieve pictures of the Detroit Tigers from 1968.

Solution:

  1. Opened Corbis Images for Education and went to the "Advanced Search" page.
  2. Entered "Detroit Tigers" in the "Search" box.
  3. Entered "1968" in the "Date Photographed Or Created" box.
  4. Clicked on the "Search" button to retrieve more than 20 pictures.

Search 2:

A University of California at San Francisco student wanted to find photographs of the 1989 San Francisco earthquake for a research paper he was writing.

Solution:

  1. Opened Corbis Images for Education and went to the "Advanced Search" page.
  2. Entered "san francisco earthquake" in the "Search" box.
  3. Entered "1989" in the "Date Photographed Or Created" box.
  4. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved more than 120 pictures.

Search 3:

A professor teaching an American literature class wanted to find a picture of poet Walt Whitman when he was a young man.

Solution:

  1. Opened Corbis Images for Education and entered "Walt Whitman" in the search box.
  2. Clicked on the "go" button and retrieved more than 30 photographs, one of which was a picture of a young Walt Whitman.

Search 4:

An academy student writing a paper on the history of proliferation of nuclear weapons wanted to include a picture of the mushroom cloud of an atomic explosion from World War II.

Solution:

  1. Opened Corbis Images for Education and clicked on the "Galleries" link.
  2. Clicked on the "World War II" link under "World at War" and retrieved more than 60 photographs, two of which were what the student was looking for.

Search 5:

How can one find a photograph of a bust of Julius Caesar?

Solution:

  1. Open Corbis Images for Education and enter "Julius Caesar (not Augustus) and bust" in the search box.
  2. Click on the "go" button to retrieve four photographs depicting a bust of Julius Caesar.
