Business and Company ASAP provides access to all the business and management journals, trade journals, newspapers and directories needed for in-depth research on companies, products, markets, industries, economics and management disciplines. It also provides full-text U.S. and international private and public company directory listings, and full-text PR Newswire releases on those corporations.

Search 1:

A media specialist from ECNext using Business & Company ASAP wanted to know how to find periodical publishing companies in Ohio that have sales of more than $1,000,000 per year.

Solution:

  1. Opened Business & Company ASAP and went into the "Advanced search" page.
  2. Clicked on "SIC description" and entered "publishing" as a keyword in the first entry box.
  3. Selected SIC code 2721.
  4. Clicked on the "Search" link in the left-side menu.
  5. Clicked on "Company Profiles".
  6. Entered this search in the three entry boxes:

    1. Selected "SIC Code (si)" and entered "2721".
    2. Selected "Key Word (ke)" and entered "Ohio".
    3. Selected "Sales (sa)" and entered ">1000000".

  7. Clicked on the "Search" button and three company profiles matching the above criteria were retrieved.

Search 2:

A customer using Business & Company ASAP wanted to find full-text articles published in 2003 about the effects of Mad Cow Disease on the Canadian economy.

Solution:

  1. Opened Business & Company ASAP and went into the "Subject guide search" page and entered "mad cow disease" to find the preferred term. It was "Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy".
  2. Went to the the "Advanced search" page, making sure that searching was being done in the "Business Index Asap" module.
  3. Selected "Subject (su)" and entered "Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy" in the first entry box.
  4. Selected "Key Word (ke)" and entered "canad* and econom*" in the second entry box.
  5. Checked the "to articles with text" box and limited by date "on" any date and month in 2003.
  6. Clicked on the "Search" button and more than 15 full-text articles matching the above criteria were retrieved.

Search 3:

An economics researcher using Business & Company ASAP wanted to retrieve the most recent full-text peer-reviewed articles on economic trends or forecasts in the United States.

Solution:

  1. Opened Business & Company ASAP went to the "Subject guide search" page.
  2. Entered the word "economic" and clicked the "Search" button to retrieve the list of preferred terms for economic trends and forecasts. It was found that "Economic Trends" and "Economic Forecasting" were preferred terms.
  3. Went to the "Advanced search" page.
  4. Selected "Subject (su)" and entered "Economic Forecasting or Economic Trends" in the first entry box.
  5. Selected "Key Word (ke)" and entered "United States or U.S. or U.S.A. or US or USA" in the second entry box.
  6. Clicked on the "to articles with text" and "to peer reviewed publications" boxes.
  7. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved more than 10 full-text articles fitting the researcher's criteria.

Search 4:

A commodities researcher learning how to use Business & Company ASAP wanted a search strategy that would provide him full-text articles dealing with silver market trends from 2002 to the present.

Solution:

  1. Opened Business & Company ASAP and went to the "Keyword search" page.
  2. Entered "silver market" in the entry box, searching for words "in title, citation, abstract".
  3. Checked the "to articles with text" box and limited by date "after" 2001.
  4. Clicked on the "Search" button ands retrieved more than 50 articles matching the researcher's request.

Search 5:

A user of Business & Company ASAP wanted to find the company profile for the world headquarters of 3Com Corp.

Solution:

  1. Opened Business & Company ASAP and went to the "Subject guide search" page.
  2. Entered "3Com" in the entry box.
  3. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved a list of 3Com companies.
  4. Selected "3com Corp." and clicked on the "Read" button before "about this company".
  5. Two company profiles were retrieved. One in San Diego, California with 75 employees and the other in Marlborough, Massachusetts with 3,300 employees.
  6. Clicked on the 3Com Corp. company profile with 3,300 employees. This was the profile for the world headquarters of 3Com Corp.
