Associations Unlimited Sample Searches

Associations Unlimited combines data from the entire Encyclopedia of Associations series and includes additional IRS information on nonprofit organizations, for a total of more than 456,000 organizations.

Search 1:

An employee of Aqueduct Partners using Associations Unlimited wanted to find associations in the USA that had a minimum of 100 software or technology companies as their members.

Solution:

  1. Opened Associations Unlimited and went to the "Custom Search" page.
  2. Made sure only the "National" and "Regional, State or Local" boxes were checked.
  3. Entered "Technology" in the "Subject Descriptor:" entry box.
  4. Entered "software" in the "Free-Text:" entry box.
  5. Clicked on the "Search" button and nine associations were retrieved.

Search 2:

A sales representative using Associations Unlimited wanted to know how to retrieve a list of music-related associations based in the state of Kansas.

Solution:

  1. Opened Associations Unlimited and went to the "Custom Search" page.
  2. Unchecked the "National" and "International" boxes at the top of the page.
  3. Entered "KS" in the "State/Province:" entry box.
  4. Entered "music*" in the "Subject Descriptor:" entry box.
  5. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved more than 10 music associations based in Kansas.

Search 3:

A sales representative helping a customer evaluate Associations Unlimited wanted to know how to find out which associations in any particular association search required dues.

Solution:

Unlike the foundation of the Associations Unlimited database, the reference book series Encyclopedia of Associations, dues is not a designated category and therefore not directly searchable. The best way to find associations that require dues is by entering the word "dues" in the "Free-Text:" entry box when in the "Custom Search" page.


Search 4:

An employee of ESX Engineering using Associations Unlimited wanted to develop a search that would allow him to retrieve associations in the Pacific time zone of the United States with a budget ranging from $7.5 million to $15 million, that are accessible by e-mail, and have a Web site.

Solution:

  1. Opened Associations Unlimited and went to the "Custom Search" page.
  2. Made sure only the "National" and "Regional, State and Local" boxes were checked.
  3. Entered "CA or Oregon or WA or NV or ID" in the "State/Province:" entry box.
  4. Selected "Yes" for "Email?:" and "URL?".
  5. Entered "7500000-15000000" in the "Budget:" entry box.
  6. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved more than 20 associations that fit the desired criteria.

Search 5:

A member of a Messianic Jewish congregation in California who was planning to move to Southeastern Michigan wanted to search Associations Unlimited to see if there were any Messianic Jewish congregations/organizations in Michigan.

Solution:

  1. Opened Associations Unlimited and went to the "Custom Search" page.
  2. Entered "MI" in the "State/Province:" entry box.
  3. Selected "8661, Religious Organizations" in "SIC Code & Description:".
  4. Browsed the list of subjects in "Subject Descriptor:" and selected "Messianic Judaism".
  5. Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved one Messianic Jewish organization in Michigan:
