Reference Content Updates

Science Resource Center includes the full-text of the most current print reference sets available. Continuous updating ensures the reference content is reviewed and updated:

  • New editions of reference sets published in an ongoing publication cycle, such as the Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine, 3rd Edition, are added to Science Resource Center as they are published.
  • Reference sets outside of an ongoing publication cycle, such as the World of… titles, undergo a periodic review: articles are evaluated, and necessary updates are made.
  • Key scientific discoveries, changes and so forth are handled on a case-by-case basis. In September 2006 for example, a review of all entries that referenced Pluto as a planet began as a result of the decision made public in August 2006 to demote Pluto to a dwarf planet. Fully revised and updated entries are now included in Science Resource Center. In 2007, a focus on global warming-related entries will ensure they are complete and up-to-date.

In 2006 Gale invested $310,000 in reference content updating and will invest an additional $250,000 in 2007. By early 2008, nearly 50% of the reference content sets will have been fully reviewed and updated. This investment in updating will continue in 2008 and beyond.
